Was there a specific beauty product that you used growing up that resonated with you?
The beauty product that I used growing up was Vaseline and lotion mixed together. That was a staple product for me to use every-day. I would mix them together in my hand and lather myself up. I really thought I was doing something when I poured my lotion into my Vaseline container and mixed it together.
Your daughter’s eczema was the reason why you started your popular skin care product Brooklyn Body Butter. What was the issue behind the products you were using that couldn’t clear up your daughter’s skin condition?
For Brooklyn’s skin, I was using topical’s prescribed by doctors. The issue I was facing using those prescribed products was, they were just sitting on the surface of her skin. They were not penetrating and moisturizing her skin like I wanted them to. It was also a hassle to lotion her up and then spot treat areas with the prescribed product. With Brooklyn Body Butter, you can use it all over. It’s an all-in-one product.
Describe the moment when you made your first batch of Brooklyn Body Butter and it cleared up your daughters’ skin.
When I realized my product was working for my daughter’s skin, I was like, no way. I was so amazed that I created a product that worked the way that I wanted it to for her skin.
How do you go about choosing the names and scents of Brooklyn Body Butter?
The scents I choose for Brooklyn Body Butter are scents that create feel good memories and nostalgia. I love when people smell a scent and go, oh my gosh, this reminds me of…. As far as the naming goes, I try to name them creative names that catch people’s attention.
Brooklyn Body Butter is homemade through your own personal labor. With every jar, what feelings and emotions do you experience when you see others receiving benefits from your product?
The feeling is unreal. I’m big on my energy and emotions while making Brooklyn Body Butter. If I’m ever in a bad mood, I do not make Body Butter at all. I wait until that negative energy passes by. My product is focused on spreading love and I don’t want to pass any negative energy. Some days I feel really overwhelmed (not negatively), just in a sense of…. this is really happening. I feel thankful because I put a lot of time into making Brooklyn Body Butter. It’s hard to put into words the gratitude and appreciation that I feel from my labor.
At this moment, Brooklyn Body Butter is a staple in Detroit and a nationally recognized product. What other areas do you plan to cover amidst the continuous growth of your company?
My 2-year mark of having Brooklyn Body Butter is coming up in April. Ideally, I would like to continue to grow my brand by offering more products such as skin oils, body scrubs and soaps. I would like to distribute my product to more local establishments. A lot of people want me to have my own store front and though that sounds awesome, that’s not in my plan right now. I would prefer to continue to distribute my products. I really want to continue to build inventory and hire assistance to increase my productivity.
